Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

[edit]
2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Category discussion warning

Monuments and memorials referencing years has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Arganda del Rey

[edit]

Hola Draceane.

21:15, 17 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2024 voting is open!

[edit]
2023 Picture of the Year: Incense plays an important role in Vietnamese life. It is considered as a sacred bridge to connect the visible life of human beings and the world of heaven, earth, and gods. Photo taken in Quang Phu Cau village, on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam. In this picture, incense sticks are being set out to dry, after being dipped in the incense solution.

[edit]

Thank you for your interest in the image. However, I think the Plöckenstein is further to the left, outside the frame. I don't think the parts of the Šumava that are in principle visible from here made it above the haze and the curvature of the earth that day. Greetings Milseburg (talk) 14:47, 24 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Milseburg: Thank you for pointing it out. It's true, that I misidentifyied Plöckenstein, but it's still Šumava. According to U. Deuschle's web, it could be Sternstein. [2]: There are Schober and Schatzwand in the left (ca. 30 km), then there are some south-eastern slopes of Hausruck, then "nothing" in the Danube valley and then the highest mountain is probably Sternstein. It's not uncommon to see Šumava from the Alps (I have seen it many times from Upper Austria/Salzburg... and otherwise, even with very misty weather; last weekend I saw 200 km distant Vojak from the Schobergruppe – the weather was rather hot and very hazy). Otherwise, please check, if there is a stitching error left to Faistenauer Schafberg. — Draceane talkcontrib. 15:24, 24 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Zvuky zvonů z let 1940 a 1941

[edit]

Zdravím, chci se zeptat, proč jste přesunul ty nahrávky zvonů z kategorie Audio files of church bells in Czechoslovakia do kategorie Audio files of church bells in the Czech Republic? Ty nahrávky jsou z let 1940 a 1941 z doby Československa. Moc tomu nerozumím. Skim (talk) 19:24, 24 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

— Draceane talkcontrib. 07:06, 25 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Skim (talk) 07:51, 25 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Já jen upozorňuji na to, že ta kategorie bude neskladebná, resp. zbytečně budeme zakládat nadřazené kategorie Church bells in Czechoslovakia (když máme Church bells in the Czech Republic) a Audio files of Czechoslovakia (když máme Audio files of the Czech Republic), nikdo to pak ve stromu kategorií nenajde: bude hledat zvuky českých zvonů, a ony budou v úplně separé „československém“ stromu. Ostatně argumentace dobou vzniku nahrávek je vlastně nesprávná, to bychom museli založit podle té logiky „protektorátní“ kategorie, což už by byla cesta úplně do pekel. K časové kategorizaci pak slouží např. Category:Audio files of 1941 a pak Category:1941 in Czechoslovakia – do ní by se daly jednotlivě soubory taky vložit, nicméně upozorňuji, že brzy přijde některý čistič kategorií, co to šoupne do Category:1941 in Czechia, protože to je přesnější geografické třídění. — Draceane talkcontrib. 08:07, 25 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Burgos images

[edit]

Hi @Draceane, thanks for catching my mistake and reverting those changes.

That said, could you provide a bit more context regarding this image? Since the painting lacks an obvious visual connection to the city, using "Burgos" for both the category and the description makes it difficult to see the link between the two. Adding a bit more detail really helps people understand what they are looking at. 🙏
