First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hello, NaBUru38!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your photos of cars in Uruguay. I also have a request: If you happen to see a Ford Corcel II like the one pictured on the right, WP could use a rear view of one. Thanks again, I am going to try to edit the lighting of some of your shots from Montevideo and see if they can be improved. Cheers, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 18:03, 23 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

SCCA car categorizing

Would you please look through the images that I took in Category:2013 SCCA National Championship Runoffs? I don't understand enough to add the cars into the different classes under Category:Classes of sports car racing. I attended the runoffs at Road America from 2009 to 2013 so there's more to check there if you choose to accept my request. I have 18 more to upload to the 2012 category which I hope to work on soon. Categoría:Geología de España

[edit]

Category discussion warning

People associated with association football has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hello, I always remove license plates per en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Automobiles/Conventions... where that policy was removed by OSX in May 2014. I don't recall having ever seen that change, or a vote to remove that, so I continued doing it all these years. NaBUru38 (talk) 17:51, 14 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2024 voting is open!

[edit]
2023 Picture of the Year: Incense plays an important role in Vietnamese life. It is considered as a sacred bridge to connect the visible life of human beings and the world of heaven, earth, and gods. Photo taken in Quang Phu Cau village, on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam. In this picture, incense sticks are being set out to dry, after being dipped in the incense solution.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2024 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,

Recent changes

[edit]

Hi NaBUru38. I kindly ask you to please consider reverting the recent category changes that replaced “Consumption of alcohol by country” with “Alcoholic beverages by country.” These are not the same concepts: consumption refers to the patterns and statistics of alcohol use in different countries, while alcoholic drinks refers to types of beverages produced or available in those countries. Even if one could argue that the distinction might be debatable, such a large-scale change should not be made unilaterally and without prior discussion with the community. Mass alterations of this kind need to be preceded by dialogue and consensus-building, especially when they affect a whole category system. Would you please revert the changes so that a proper discussion can take place first? Thank you for your understanding. Regards, Sturm (talk) 23:01, 22 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hello User:Sturm, how are you doing?
I felt that those pages were overcategorized. Also I planned to add pages about non-drinking alcohol, such as ethanol fuel. For that I had started adding pages at Category:Bioenergy in Brazil. So I got bold and started doing the changes.
Let me re-create the "Consumption of alcohol" categories with a new format, and see if you like it. Later! -- NaBUru38 (talk) 23:18, 22 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
This is not a matter of whether I like it or not — you may even be right. I only ask that you please take care not to make large-scale edits in these “grey areas” without prior discussion. Even when changes may seem reasonable, mass edits should follow community dialogue first. Thank you, and good contributions! Sturm (talk) 23:25, 22 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
